A Re-Purposed Night Stand

Can I just start by saying "I LOVE MUCINEX D!" My germy friends (cold germs, not real friends) came to visit me a few days ago, and they have decided to extend their stay. It is going on three days of having a sore throat, fever, cold chills, sweating, congestion so bad the back of my eyeballs feel like they are carrying bowling balls, sneezing, and coughing. I tried every over the counter med I could find and finally, I tried Mucinex. Not the regular mucinex (all that did for me was make me drink more water than I thought humanly possible and still be thirsty). I took two Mucinex D tablets and I feel 95% better (it would be 100 if I could get rid of the bulging eye feeling).

So, while I was feeling better today, I finished the thrift store night stand I started to refinish the other day. This is what it looked like before.....

There are water marks, scratches, digs, paint splatters, and some unidentifiable yucky stuff that I'm just not going to think about. Oh, and speaking of unidentifiable yucky stuff.....

WHAT is holding this quarter to the inside of the drawer???????????

Anyone want to guess?? No, me either! So, anyway, I started by cleaning it really good (with Windex and my husbands old boxers...that is okay right?? It's like duct tape, you can use it for everything!! The Windex, not my husband's boxers!) I gave it a really good sanding with my palm sander, except in the areas where I knew I would want the dark stain to show through. I used Kilz Bay Fog paint...and here's the kicker...that is what the can says the color is, but it's not really...after four...yes...4...attempts at getting the color to match the sample card, we finally chose to stop trying because I actually liked this color better. It turned out a little lighter than what it was originally supposed to be. I gave it three coats of paint and used steel wool in between each coat to sand it smooth and distress it. I like using the steel wool on the gray paint because it leaves darker gray streaks on the surface.

The only thing I think I might change is the hardware...I kind of like that it is original to it and there isn't anything wrong with it, but...I can't help but to think...well...it looks like the night stand is smiling at me!! Do you see it too, or is it all my meds making me loopy?

Another view....and still smiling....
Here is a close up of some of the distressing....
Then, because I was still feeling good, I decided to line the drawers with pages from an old Reader's Digest book that had a broken spine. I never figured out what the gooey stuff holding the quarter to the drawer was, but I was able to get it off...it came off in one big CHUNK...yick!

So, there you have it! My refinished, creepy smiling, night stand! Now, I'm going back to bed to finish my book, and the night stand is going to my booth!

  2. Turned out great! I don't think I would have noticed the smile until you mentioned it but now that you did...yes, it looks a little happy! I like it though. I couldn't find an email for you but wanted to get back to you about the shoes. Can you shoot me your address? I don't want to spoil things by responding here if you want it to be surprise!

  3. It's smiling because it looks sooo much better now!! Great job! Did you use any glaze on top of the distressing, or how did you get that dark color to come through? Thanks!
