Hello Everyone! Are you ready for Thanksgiving??? I am almost there! I have been to the Grocery store five times within the last three days, I've cleaned and re-cleaned my house almost as much, and I finally, FINALLY just got done decorating! I have to leave to go out of town tonight and won't be back until tomorrow evening, so my decorating and cleaning, and...oh---pooh, I almost forgot---pie baking (I'm making home made Cherry, Pumpkin, and Apple) has to be done tonight. These are the times that I would LOVE to have two ovens (or another cook). So, here are some of my Thanksgiving/little bits of Christmas deocr...deocr...what is deocr??? Decor is what I meant...my fingers were just not listening!!
Okay, so this is my Thanksgiving/Christmas Kick-off -kitchen! I have a mixture of holly, real pine, real cranberries, pears, and pomegranates. Just pretend you don't see the big separation in the middle of my tree!! After Thanksgiving I will fill it in with some more holly and other crap Christmas goodies!
This is a shelf that I made with some left-over wood. I took some white paint that I had and dry-brushed it on to make it look weathered, and then added some hooks for our mugs. I love to decorate this for the different seasons!
One tradition I have for Thanksgiving is to use ornaments as napkin rings. Then everyone can take it home and put it on their tree!!
My Granddad's hutch that I inherited (I love, love, love it---it reminds me of him every time I see it!)
Some $2.00 baskets from Target with pine cones, pine branches, and faux pumpkins on my steps...I decorate these for all different holidays too! (I cheated and filled them with plastic grocery bags first so I didn't have to put so much in!)
Lights, fall garland, scarecrows, and fallish looking ornaments wrap around the railings!! (Several of the bulbs have blown out so I just hide those with...stuff...)
My fireplace in my Family Room (it would look so much nicer with a fire lit but I'm too busy to sit down there and enjoy it...poohy...is that how you spell poohy? pies!)
And because this post isn't long enough yet...a closer look at my mantel (sorry it's so dark, I need to change the light bulbs...but I cant... because I don't have time....Poohy pies!)
AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST....
Some acorns that me and little "N" collected in our woods were put into glass mason jars and a glass pumpkin!! So, there you have it...this is what I've been working on all week in-between everything else!
OH....AND...ONE MORE THING....
I wanted to share my attempt at making faux mercury glass! I'm not sure if I like it yet, I know that I don't love it. I'm going to try again with the Krylon Looking Glass Spray paint to compare it with the Krylon Metallic.
I used glass-ware that I found at the thrift store for $.25 a piece.
I used my hose to mist the glass and then I painted one on the inside and the outside of the glass, and the other I just sprayed the outside...I didn't see a difference.
Here is the after (it was also only one coat...I'm going to try another to see if it is better.)
It is definitely not as shiny as the cap looks...bummer! I also want to go back and add some brown to it because I want them to resemble the faux mercury votives I bought from my daughter's fund-raiser at school....
They are all shiny and perty...
Mine did not turn out like the one's I already have, so I'm going to attempt it again with the other Krylon paint... once Thanksgiving is over of course:)
HOPE EVERYONE HAS A FANTASTIC THANKSGIVING!

Your post is a hoot...you've expressed beautifully what all of us experience as we prepare for the holidays. Everything turned out beautifully! I'll be interested to see if you achieve the desired effect with the mercury glass project. Great idea...if it works for you. Thank you for sharing your charming designs. Cherry Kay

Hi Tracey-
ReplyDeleteI have had projects turn out like your mercury glass one. Sometimes ya just gotta play around with it to see if you can come up with some clever fix. I once painted white over a purple planter I had. I didn't like the white right after I sprayed it so I took it under the faucet to wash it off. Only some of it came off, but I loved the look. It looked aged and chippy. A mistake that became a keeper. I love Rust Oleum paints. Do they have a mercury glass finish?
My best- Diane
